Collection of weapons and armour

A jewel of the Yverdon-les-Bains region and the second biggest Swiss castle, Grandson played a key role in the Confederates battle against Charles the Bold. Once vanquished, he fled and left many items of value at the castle. Some of these pieces and reconstructions are now part of the collection of weapons and armour.

The first big battle of the Burgundian Wars took place on 2nd March 1476 in the town of Concise. The battle of Grandson against Charles the Bold owes its name to the castle and the town overlooking Lake Neuchâtel. Converted into a museum, the castle has a collection of weapons and weapon parts like those used around 1476/1500 by the Swiss Confederates and the Burgundian army. Three original cannons, but also reconstructions of Charles the Bold’s hat decorated with precious stones and other interesting pieces, show just how valuable the items were that fell into the hands of the Confederates. There are also two models of the battle fields of Grandson and Morat setting out the events that took place.

The grand Weapon Room houses a large collection of armour from the 15th to the 19th century and above this, you can admire the coats of arms of the Fribourg and Bernese bailiffs posted at Grandson, from 1476 to 1798. The museum also has a unique collection of crossbows.
