Yverdon-les-Bains - Exhibition
For her solo exhibition at the Centre d'art contemporain Yverdon-les-Bains (CACY) - her first in a public institution and in French-speaking Switzerland - Basel-based artist Anita Mucolli, of Kosovar origin, has designed an immersive installation of metal and ceramic sculptures set in a sound environment. Anita Mucolli's evocative works question human beings' aspiration to transcend biological limits and their complex relationships with animals.
At CACY, Anita Mucolli continues her research into the notions of purity and performance that she believes have characterized human civilization since the late 18th century, in particular the link between progress and the way in which species are subjected to it.
She uses stainless steel, silicone, ceramic and glass to create sculptures inspired by functional furniture such as surgical tables, veterinary cages and experimental equipment. An audio work conceived by Anita Mucolli and produced by sound artist Ana Jikia is broadcast throughout the exhibition, blending the sounds of laboratory activities with classical music extracts.
The ensemble, comprising some thirty new works, plunges the public into a surreal, sanitized and controlled universe. Perfectly executed in highly polished materials, Anita Mucolli's works evoke disturbing visions of a dystopian future.
