Treasures of religious architecture

A vast religious architectural heritage awaits visitors to the area and invites them to immerse themselves in a passionate spiritual, artistic and historical universe: Romanesque or regional-traditional style, figurative wall paintings among the oldest in Switzerland, the 15th Century Arcade Tower … to name but a few.

The region boasts a broad range of exceptional heritage churches, all classified historical monuments.

Built on rocky spurs or in vineyards, at the crossroads of the pilgrim ways of the Route of Santiago di Compostela or the Via Francigena. Some were part of the imposing Order of Cluny, such as the Abbey of Romainmôtier, built between 990 and 1028, or the Romanesque church of Montcherand, its figurative wall paintings being among the oldest in Switzerland.

The church of Chêne-Pâquier (1667) bears precious witness to the very first specifically Protestant architecture. The church of Yverdon-les-Bains with its curved corner façade, among other features, represents one of the major Protestant architectural creations of the 18th Century.
