Reuge, manufacturer of music boxes
Reuge SA in Sainte-Croix makes music boxes and mechanical music objects. Bicentennial know-how in Sainte-Croix in the heart of the Jura.
Musée Reuge, fabrique de boîtes à musique, Sainte-Croix Reuge has the worldwide monopoly of music box manufacture, songbirds and top of the range musical watches.
Situtated in Sainte-Croix in the heart of the Jura massif, this company was founded in 1865 by watchmaker Charles Reuge. It remained in the family until 1988, when it became a limited company with 60 employees.
Reuge survived the crises affecting the music box industry, such as the two World Wars or the invention of the phonograph.
Today it is the largest producer of music boxes in Sainte-Croix, which made this activity its specialty in the 19th century. Industrial activity in Sainte-Croix was intense: music boxes, typewriters, cameras and projectors, as well as record players. Today there is an international micro-welding centre.
The collection of Reuge’s historic music boxes is exhibited at the CIMA Museum in Sainte-Croix.
