The Living Museum / Workshop of the Espace Gutenberg

The Espace Gutenberg boasts an impressive collection of historical material related to the history of printing which is housed in several different rooms at the Brit Shelter at Yvonand. This « living museum » was founded 15 years ago; since then, it has continued to grow and extend its activities. Today it has 65 active members and nearly 100 Friends of the Centre.

The Espace Gutenberg is also a « museum workshop », dedicated to developing artisanal crafts : letter-press printing, lithography, and the manufacture of its own paper. The museum invites adults and children alike to discover the arts of typography and paper-making as they existed many years ago. Visitors may learn ancient printing and lithographic techniques as well as how to prepare pulp in a tank for making paper.

The machines in the collection date mostly from the 19th century. They have been repaired and restored and most of them are now in working order. All the printing presses are manually operated. Visitors to the centre may try their hand at printing on some of them.

Available for sale at the Espace Gutenberg are a series of texts hand-printed on paper that has been made at the centre itself and mounted on a high quality frame – an idea for a unique and original gift!
