Roman mosaics

The most beautiful set of Roman mosaics in the north of the Alps has been uncovered near Orbe, on the Boscéaz site. These unique vestiges of a luxurious villa represent figurative and geometrical scenes.

Mosaïques romaines, Orbe-Boscéaz

Four pavilions protect the site of the best set of Roman mosaics in Switzerland in Boscéaz, near Orbe, a medieval town in the region of Yverdon-les-Bains. Discovered in the middle of the 19th century, these mosaics paved eight of the 100 rooms in a huge and luxurious Gallo-Roman villa that was built towards 160 A.D. It was destroyed during invasions and served as a quarry in the Middle Ages. There is no structure above ground left.

Four mosaics represent geometrical trompe l’œil motifs and four mosaics are figurative: the labyrinth of the Minotaur, Theseus leaving Ariane who is asleep, Ulysses calling upon Achilles to fight, the Roman Gods as symbols of the seven planets and the seven days of the week.

Between 1986 and 2004, the Boscéaz site served as an educational workshop for archeology students of Lausanne university. These excavations brought a ninth mosaic to light, which is currently being renovated: the mithraeum, a place of worship of Mythra and the thermae.

Visits from Easter to the end of October.
