About slate and chalk… school in former times
What was school like in Sainte-Croix at the beginning of the 20th century? The exhibition traces the pupils’ life at that time, underscored with many, quite exceptional, souvenirs.
Two years of research, in which 5,700 ‘Feuilles d’Avis’ newspapers from Sainte-Croix were scrutinized page after page – a huge task carried out by four ladies from the Sainte-Croix area that has allowed the exhibition ‘D’ardoise et de craie… l’école d’autrefois’ (About slate and chalk… school in former times) to be put on.
The call for contributors was answered by 67 persons aged 70 to 96, who lent out their school and exercise books. The researchers were also able to obtain about a hundred class photographs, promotion celebrations and documents describing school outings. Other objects were lent by the Association of school property of the canton of Vaud.
Some of the exhibited objects are rather special, like the ‘cheater’s pen’ or a light socket that was cleverly transformed into a pencil-sharpener.
Two events will be highlights of this exhibition next February: an arithmetic competition from 1930 and a dictation from 1914.
